Beijing Olympics Featured Athletes with Healthy Bodies

Dementia and Omega 3's

This post will address both how omega 3 fatty acids can help with dementia and why you want to do your homework when you choose a fish oil brand.

When Alzheimer's disease hits a family member, it is quite devastating. When your brain is shutting down it destroys your life.

While we have known that omega-3 fatty acids are important for brain development in the very young, it has only been recently that studies are verifying that omega-3 fatty acids can help keep our minds sharp as we get older.

Just this morning I read an article that reported how "two studies published in the November 2007 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition show that diets high in omega-3 fatty acids such as EPA and DHA reduce the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer's disease, as we get older".

One study involved people who ate at least 6 ounces of fish twice a week or more. Those folks had significantly higher scores in all cognitive function tests.

The other study measured blood levels of omega 3 fatty acids which is a good indicator when consumed from both diet and supplements. The group with the highest blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids produced the best results.

An important consideration is to evaluate the source of the omega 3 fatty acids that will be most beneficial to us. What is important is that long chain fatty acids like EPA and DHA, found in fish oil, provide the cognitive benefits for people, and what is found in our diets is mostly the shorter chain fatty acid ALA.

The key here is that our bodies must convert ALA to EPA and DHA, and we have to consume alot of the former to result in enough of the latter to get the benefits. This makes it very hard to get what we need from most food sources, and confirms the importance of getting the EPA and DHA that benefits our bodies so much from cold water fish or fish oil supplements.

In regard to eating fish as part of our diets, the concern with consuming enough to get the benefits we need is that we do not have toxin-free farm raised fish available. Plus many people simply do not eat fish (or enough of it) consistently each week.

There are many benefits of fish oil supplements in the areas of heart disease and conditions involving inflammation such as arthritis and even asthma. With the new research regarding Alzsheimer's disease it is even more desirable to supplement our diets with fish oil.

Safe Air to Breathe as Important as Pure Water

Let's compare drinking water and breathing air. Lots and lots of folks filter the water they drink because they have learned of the importance to their health of pure, clean water. Did you know that we breathe on average 20,000 liters of air a day compared to drinking about an average of 2 liters of water per day.

Should we be thinking more about the air we breathe? When you consider that the toxins in the air are directly absorbed by the lungs, maybe we should.

Indoor air pollution has been tagged by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) as our number one environmental health concern.

It is estimated that some 40 million Americans have allergies and 17 million have asthma. Millions more other lung or breathing illnesses.

Consider some factors that have increased our air pollution:

1) We use more chemicals

2) Our homes are closed up tighter than they used to be, trapping those chemicals, toxins and fumes in the air in our homes.

The closed environment of our homes also presents problems such as mold and bacteria growth.

Natural Vitamins vs. Synthetic

Way back 25 years ago.. before I started to take this brand of vitamins, of course I did my homework on the differences between vitamins. Natural vitamins vs synthetic vitamins was one consideration. Just the other day as I was spending some time for online research, I came across an article that states pretty much the same thing that I learned 25 years ago.

Natural vitamins are balanced the way you would find the ingredients in foods. Higher quality 'food' is used to make them. The best brands use low heat, low pressure processing to make the vitamins. It is important to have the strong enzymatic action be retained in the finished vitamin product. Natural vitamins are absorbed and utilized by the body to provide the results that are desired when taking them. Reputable brands are backed by independent, proven scientific research.

That is a TALL order, but it IS available 'out there'. This is why we do our homework!

Synthetic vitamins are man made, test tube products. There are no enzymes. Inorganic substances are used and side effects are common.

Health food store choices are actually a third type of vitamins, and do not fare much better than synthetic according to many folks. Low quality raw materials are used and the formulations are not balanced. Heat extracted ingredients contribute to the finished product that presents with weak enzymes, fillers, and harsh binders. Chemicals are used in processing which is almost always undesirable.

Certain vitamins need special scrutiny. Synthetic vitamin E can actually block natural vitamin E activity in the body. In regard to B vitamins, some synthetic B's can be adversely affected by the food dyes that are a common ingredient in the synthetic vitamins.

I could relate to an example that was presented in the article. Think about the fact that synthetic vitamins, and even certain natural isolate (health food store varieties) vitamins, extract ingredients from food sources. If you take only one ingredient from a food like an apple, to put into the vitamin, you miss the other nutrients in that food. Sometimes the ingredient extracted doesn't work without those other parts that, in foods, work synergistically together. Plus you are not benefitting from those other ingredients.

Our bodies need a broad spectrum of nutrients for the best health. The reason we supplement is that we don't get all of these nutrients from our food. That is a proven fact. And when we do make the commitment and take on the expense of supplementing our diets with vitamins, we should expect to get the best effect that will give us better health.

As in everything, we have choices. Since vitamin quality is still not regulated well as far as what can be available on the store shelves for us to purchase, it falls on individuals to find the best quality.

After all of these years, I do not think it is fair that certain vitamin manufacturers still look for the cheapest way to produce their products. Synthetics and chemical vitamins are less expensive to make and to buy, but in the end, at what cost?

The first ever Long-term Food Supplement Study was recently published. In measuring blood tests of participants that either took one certain natural brand, other store brands, and no supplement at all, it was determined that certain blood levels were actually worse with taking a synthetic store brand than taking no vitamin at all. To me, this is not only a scary thing for the health of these folks, but also not fair that these products can even be available for sale. We certainly don't want to throw our money away by getting no benefits, and of course do not want to be worse off when we do buy and take a vitamin.

Many highly advertised synthetic vitamins have some serious health considerations attached to people taking them. They may be processed at high temperatures and contain chemicals and other carcinogenic material. Toxins like this that are taken over long periods of time are potentially dangerous. Allergic reactions are also to be considered and would be more immediate. Other reactions include fatigue, memory loss, depression and insomnia.

What is very disappointing is that some of these major brands that have been around for a long time, and that people trust, have some serious issues if one does the homework required to uncover. Not only are they using cheap ingredients and formulas, but there are not optimal amounts of individual vitamins present that are needed by the body. And the chemicals that lead to poor health should not be there at all.

Bottom line: research your brand, TRUST your brand, so that you can build GOOD HEALTH that is proven and measurable.

Beef tastes great right? Just like most of what we hear about our diets, the word 'moderation' should apply. Why you ask? Well if the recalls due to contamination and now mistreatment of animals is not enough, how about the fact that it is not the most healthy protein we can choose.

A couple of posts ago there was a Fox News Clip where Get Clean-er products were featured, and Sloan talked about some other 'green' issues. One of those was bottled water, and how environmentally 'unfriendly' bottled water is.

Today I watched this news video about BOTTLED WATER and it reinforced what Sloan was talking about. This is worth a look folks.

Vitamin D Shines Beyond Bone Health

Vitamin D and Bone Health is featured in this month's Alternative Health Sciences Bulletin, and it is a very interesting one. I wanted to share this message with you for your Alternative Health Choices decision. It comes to us from the chairman of our Medical Affairs.

Do you know which nutrient is created in your skin when exposed to adequate sunlight, facilitates calcium absorption and is so important to humans that it is considered to be both a vitamin and a hormone? Many of you may have guessed vitamin D and you would be correct! Vitamin D has long been recognized for its essential role in bone health. Working in concert with a number of other vitamins, minerals and hormones, vitamin D helps promote bone mineralization (1). Your body is finely tuned to utilize Vitamin D in the incorporation of calcium and other minerals into supporting the very dynamic process of bone shaping and reshaping and without adequate intakes of vitamin D your bones can become brittle leading to an increased risk of bone fractures and osteoporosis. But there are a number of other functions Vitamin D plays in the body and research is finally beginning to uncover some exciting new health benefits of Vitamin D.

Now there is really exciting new research indicating that vitamin D’s health benefits may shine well beyond bone health. Because vitamin D also plays an important role in maintaining a healthy immune system and regulating cell growth and differentiation (2, 3), the process that determines what a cell is destined to become, supplemental vitamin D may actually be helpful for cancer prevention, in particular prostate, breast and colon cancers (4, 5, 6, 7).

In 2005, Harvard researchers reported the results of a study involving 1029 men with prostate cancer and 1,300 healthy men. After analyzing the blood of these men, researchers found that men with the highest level of vitamin D had significantly lower overall risk (45%) of prostate cancer, including aggressive prostate cancer. In addition, men with a specific receptor that helps vitamin D work got greater protection if they also had high levels of vitamin D in their blood. Those men had a 55% lower risk of prostate cancer and 77% lower risk of aggressive cancer.

Just this year, researchers pooled data from two earlier studies, the Nurses Health Study and the St. George’s Hospital Study and found that women with the highest blood levels of the active form of vitamin D had the lowest risk of breast cancer. Researchers also reported that the level of vitamin D in the blood associated with a 50% reduction in risk could be maintained by taking 2000 IU of vitamin D3 daily plus spending as little as 10-15 minutes a day in the sun (8).

Vitamin D emerged as a protective factor against colon cancer in a study of over 3,000 adults (96% of whom were men) who underwent a colonoscopy between 1994 and 1997 to look for polyps or lesions in the colon. About 10% of the group was found to have at least one advanced cancerous lesion in the colon. However, there was a significantly lower risk of advanced cancerous lesions among men with the highest vitamin D intake.

Such study results have sparked further interest in the role of vitamin D for cancer prevention and more good news for vitamin D has just arrived. In the June 2007, issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers at the Osteoporosis Research Center at Creighton University discovered that postmenopausal women taking calcium or calcium plus vitamin D for reducing the risk of bone fractures (the primary outcome of the study), got the added benefit of a significant reduction in the risk of cancer. In this study, 1179 healthy, post-menopausal women were randomly assigned to receive 1400-1500 mg of calcium, 1400-1500 mg of calcium plus 1100 IU of vitamin D3, or a placebo. After 4 years, women receiving calcium only reduced their risk of developing cancer by 47% and the women taking calcium plus vitamin D, had a 60% risk reduction!

The findings of such studies really do highlight the importance of achieving optimum vitamin D status. Eating a healthy diet including foods fortified with vitamin D, like reduced fat milk or soy milk is certainly a good place to start. However keep in mind that many dairy products made from milk (e.g. cheese, reduced fat ice cream) are not typically fortified with vitamin D and contain only small amounts. Some ready to eat cereals may be fortified but only a few commonly eaten foods are good sources of vitamin D, like cooked salmon, mackerel and tuna.

Sun exposure for about 10 to 15 minutes at least two times a week can help, but remember sunscreen use which helps reduce the risk of skin cancer, actually blocks vitamin D synthesis in the skin. And if you plan on being out in the sun, make sure you avoid the most dangerous time of the day, between the hours of 10 am to 2 pm.

And of course, one of the safest and most convenient ways to get adequate amounts of vitamin D is to take a Multi-vitamin/mineral supplement and/or a Calcium supplement with added vitamin D. Look for a supplement with at least 400 to 800 IU of vitamin D per serving and one that provides the most active form of vitamin D, Vitamin D3 also known as cholecalciferol.

That concludes the health message, and I would just like to comment that it can be tough to find good sources of Vitamin D as a supplement. Whether in multi-vitamin form or calcium (+Vitamin D) form, sources that give you the desired results you deserve. Many brands of multi-vitamin and calcium products simply do not dissolve in your body, and so your body does not absorb the required amount. When tested, many calcium brands only deliver about half of the amount stated on the bottle that is actually absorbed. Quality is another issue. I have a Maltese puppy. His little feet and mustache do very well with the Basic Household* getting the stains out. No reaction to eyes or skin. I know my groomer recommends Tetracycline for the stains. We manage it by putting H* directly on his mustache with a few dabs of water, let it set and then rinse. Looks pretty cute to me. -Brenda

Believe it or not, we use the B-Complex to help to keep fleas off of dogs, and mosquitoes from humans as well. They just don't seem to be attracted to it. The hard part is to get it in the animal. My dog takes it with peanut butter. Also, we use a 50-50 of Basic Household* and Water for getting rid of wasp nests. It freezes them in their tracks and doesn't have any toxic smell or residue, as you know. -Anne

I just wanted to share an important testimonial with you! Recently, our son, Steve was home from college and he shared some startling news with me. You remember Steve is a second year pre-med student.

Graduation Day!

It was a beautiful day in Richmond, VA, yesterday when my second son, John Michael, graduated from the University of Richmond with a double major in Finance and Accounting! It was also Mother's Day and what a gift it was to share this day with such a special young man.

Here he is with his older brother, Joe, who is also a UR graduate ('05), and sisters Jess (just finished freshman year at Lycoming College, PA, and Jill who is a sophomore in high school. Mom, Dad, nana, pap, aunt and uncle were also celebrating John's big day!

I am sure this was a bittersweet day for John. While he is ready to move on to the next phase in his life, he has made so many friends over the past four years and I am sure it is hard to leave them. Knowing John, he will keep in touch and meet up with many of his friends real soon.

His goal is to start work soon in New York City where he hopes to lay the foundation for a successful business career. Who knows will this will actually take him, but he has some lofty goals and I feel pretty confident that he will achieve them if he stays focused and works hard.

Our time in Richmond was a whirlwind couple of days with graduation events, fine dining, meeting new people, and of course the dreaded job of packing a school year's worth of possessions, and trying to clean up an apartment where four great guys lived pretty roughly. And that is stating it mildly. Oh my, not sure how exactly one lives as they did.

We are back home and most of us will be at work (school for Jill) tomorrow. John will start the next season of his life, and my bet is that he will make sure that it will be all that he wants it to be. Here's to your success John!!

Allergy Relief

It is that time of year again.. the dreaded Allergy season. There is a great testimony that was recently shared that I will post below. But first, we have been talking about the household cleaning products that we may have in our home, and the fact that they may contain harmful chemials and toxins that have been linked to allergy challenges that many folks have.

Hand wash delicate fabrics with only 1/2 tsp per basin of water.

Fertilize African Violets and other houseplants with two drops per gallon of water.

Wallpaper Remover (this is a favorite of many) with 1 tbsp per gallon of water. Sponge on to the wallpaper soaking thoroughly. Scrape or peel off wallpaper (does not work with vinyls).

Clean Aquariums with 1/2 tsp per quart of water. Clean coral, rocks, and entire aquarium with solution and rinse thoroughly before refilling.

Wash artificial flowers with 1 tsp per gallon of water. Dip flowers and swish gently.

Chewing gum removal from fabric, carpet and hair by applying full strength. Work into the gum, and scrape off with knife blade.

Bathe your baby by gently cleaning baby's skin with 1/4 tsp in bath water. There is not irritation to baby's skin and no bathtub ring.

Camping. The camper's friendly cleaner. Apply full strength to outside of pans before putting over the fire and fire will not blacken the pans. Washes up great. Use 1/2 tsp in basin to wash dishes.

Wash car with 1 tbsp in a bucket of water. Also, if you wash the car on your lawn, it will be very beneficial to it because it makes Water more permeable to the soil. Effective for cleaning engines. Will not affect paint, gaskets, or insulating material. Best results can be achieved when the engine is hot for fastest drying of the ignition system. Use 1/4 tsp per pint of water and spray on battery terminals, let soak for 2 minutes and clean with a wire brush. use 1 tsp in radiator full of water/antifreeze to prevent rust.

Prevention of Disease

In regard to the expression, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," there really are measurable results with supplementation for the Prevention of Disease. There is research that shows prevention is a very cost-effective way to maintain your health.

We all know that 'getting well' with modern medicine is quite expensive, and health care costs are rising every day. While there is a definite need and place for medicine, there are also many horror stories of bad meds, interactions, and just not getting results.

A report presented to the Federal Government back in 1997 surprised just about everyone who read it. Milton Copulos, president of the National Defense Council Foundation (NDCF), was hired to consult on ways to reduce the cost of providing health care to the military. Most thought he would recommend things like hospital closings or consolidations, wage cuts, etc. Instead, he proposed increasing the health of active and retired military with an anti-aging program that included supplementation.

It is tough to try and decipher various research and clinical trials that are conducted in regard to supplementing and preventive care. People get upset when they open the newspaper and read headlines about a new study that shows vitamins don't make a difference in better health. Many times the groups tested are too small to draw significant conclusions, the results are often hard to read and can be manipulated, and medical trials rarely involve healthy people.

There are clinical trials that have produced some great results for antioxidant use as primarily preventive. The Harvard Heart Study concluded that the group who took Vitamin E supplements for at least two years had 41 percent less hearth disease. With the amount of heart disease present today, this is very significant. I am amazed at the amount of times just in the last six months that I heard about someone who had heart disease diagnosed during totally unrelated pre-op testing. It is scary that many folks don't know they have it and yet it is serious enough that medication (or surgery) is needed before the first operation can be performed, if at all.

Supplementing can be a confusing thing because there are many choices and we have to choose which will benefit each of us. While there is a lot of information 'out there' it is still a fact that supplements are not regulated so this means a couple of things. First, you have to do your homework and make sure the company produces a quality product with quality ingredients that will give you the results you desire. It helps is there is solid research and science behind that particular brand, not that the company settles to use generic research. Also, there is the safety issue that results from no regulation. Finally, there is the push to sell something that the consumer may not understand or need. It helps to choose a company that will give personal service, put you in touch with good information to evaluate, and which produces a safe, quality, effective supplement.

It was his hope that the environmental issues would generate a great deal of attention, and once announced it did just that – from coast to coast.

Zerbee has proposed an Earth Day Project where for a small donation of as little as $ .50 or $1.00 from all of its families, an environmentally friendly Cleaner Kit can be purchased for use at the day care center, school, or in a home. While traditionally considered a "man's disease," heart disease has become a serious health challenge for women as well. Cardiovascular disease kills over 500,000 women each year, more than the next seven causes of death combined. To give you a perspective, 1 in every 2.5 women will die of heart disease and stroke, compared to 1 in every 30 women who will die from breast cancer. What may be the most important information is that heart disease in women presents with different symptoms and physicians tend to under-diagnose the disease in women. In fact, more than half of women who die of coronary heart disease have either had no classic symptoms, or have been misdiagnosed as anxiety, stress or musculoskeletal disorders. Part of the challenge comes from the fact that coronary artery disease in women tends to present with symptoms like shortness of breath or fatigue rather than the classic "crushing" substernal pain that is more typical in men. Research conducted by NIH with 515 women surprisingly revealed that fewer than 30% of women reported having chest pain or discomfort prior to their heart attacks, and 43% reported have no chest pain at all during any phase of the attack. The most common symptoms they reported were unusual fatigue, sleep disturbances and shortness of breath. So, whether you are male or female, today is the day to put your heart health on the radar screen.

So, let's talk about what you can do. First of all, let's assess your risk and then determine what you can do to lower your risks. Yes, there is much you can do to hopefully prevent a catastrophic event from happening to you down the road! The seven major risk factors for coronary artery disease are: 1) family history, 2) obesity, 3) hypertension, 4) elevated cholesterol and triglycerides, 5) Type 2 Diabetes, 6) smoking and 7) sedentary lifestyle. Well, only one of these risk factors is not in your control. You cannot change your family history, but knowledge is good --so, if your family tree includes heart attacks, strokes and diabetes, it behooves you to look at the other 6 risk factors -- because these are all modifiable risks that you have control over! Knowing your risk factors is the first step in preventing heart disease. Once you know your risk factors, you can begin to take the steps needed to reducing your chances of developing heart disease.

Modifiable Risk Factor 1: Being overweight or obese
If you're like 65% of Americans who are overweight or obese the number one thing you can do to reduce your risk of heart disease is to achieve a healthy weight. Too much body fat, especially around your waist, puts you at higher risk. Being overweight or obese also increase your risk of other conditions like high cholesterol and triglycerides, stroke and Type 2 Diabetes. So by losing weight you can begin to reduce your risk of heart disease. And the good news is you don't have to lose a lot of weight to start to improve your health. Modest weight loss of even as little as 5-10% can significantly improve your cholesterol, blood pressure and risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.

Modifiable Risk Factor 2: Having High Blood Cholesterol levels
You can have high cholesterol and not know it because in the early phases of accumulation of cholesterol plaque in your arteries, there are no symptoms! This buildup of plaque can narrow your arteries and reduce blood flow ultimately leading to arterial blockage or blood clots in arteries that feed the heart and brain. This in turn can cause a heart attack or stroke. Lifestyle changes like improving your diet and increasing your physical activity can help lower your cholesterol. Consistently eating a diet rich in whole grains, fresh fruit, vegetables, legumes and low fat sources of protein (like soy protein) can help lower cholesterol and protect your heart. The FDA has recognized that the consumption of 25 grams or more of soy protein per day may reduce your risk of heart disease. Choosing healthy sources of fats is also incredibly important. You need to limit your intake of saturated fat (the type found in beef, butter, cheese and regular fat dairy products) and completely avoid trans fats (found in fast foods, bakery products, packaged snack foods and some margarines) as these have been clearly linked to increasing the risk of heart disease. Simultaneously, it is prudent to switch to monounsaturated fats (found in olive oil, avocado, nuts and seeds), as regular consumption of these fats has been shown to decrease your risk of heart disease. Another important heart healthy fat is omega-3 fatty acids, a type of polyunsaturated fat found in foods like fish and flaxseed that may also help protect your heart by decreasing your risk of heart attack, protect against irregular heartbeats and helping to lower triglycerides and blood pressure. Fiber is another important part of a healthy diet. Look for dark breads that contain at least 3 grams of fiber per serving, whole grain cereal that provides at least 6 grams of fiber per serving. Fiber supplements that provide at least 5 grams of fiber, preferably a blend of soluble and insoluble fiber are a prudent addition for anyone dealing with elevated lipids.

Modifiable Risk Factor 3: Having High Blood Pressure
You can also have high blood pressure or hypertension and not know it. With elevated blood pressure, your heart is working harder than normal, pushing your blood with too much pressure against your artery walls. This in turn may enlarge your heart and damage your arteries and significantly increase your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. What can you do? Well, if you are overweight, losing weight can make a significant difference in your blood pressure. Eating a heart healthy diet rich in plant foods and heart healthy fats can also help. And make sure to get adequate amounts of potassium, calcium and magnesium but watch your sodium intake. Studies indicate that populations who consume diets rich in potassium, calcium and magnesium, but limit sodium intake have lower blood pressure. Regular physical exercise also tends to strengthen the cardiovascular system and lower blood pressure. And, again, omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to support healthy blood pressure and help to maintain healthy heart rhythm.

Modifiable Risk Factor 4: Having Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 Diabetes is a serious and increasingly common disease in which the body doesn't properly use insulin, the hormone produced by the pancreas that is responsible for transporting sugar in the blood into cells of the body where it can be metabolized. Left untreated, blood sugar levels increase and will damage blood vessels, thus increasing the risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Being overweight and sedentary are two big risk factors for developing Type 2 Diabetes, and once again, modest weight loss can help prevent diabetes from developing in the first place. If you already have diabetes, weight loss, improvements in your diet and the addition of fiber can help to naturally improve your blood sugar control. Regular visits to your health care provider are critical if you already have diabetes. If you have a family member with diabetes or you are overweight, have your doctor screen you for diabetes, which can often be without symptoms until it is advanced.

Modifiable Risk Factor 5: Being Physically Inactive
Being a couch potato increases your likelihood of developing heart disease. And increasing your physical activity can make a big difference. If you're overweight it will help you burn calories, it will also help lower your blood pressure and improve your cholesterol. The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes a day, most days of the week. If you don't have time to do all 30 minutes at once, no worries, breaking it up into shorter periods of exercise is fine just be sure it all adds up to 30 minutes a day. In addition to vigorous activities like walking, running, or swimming, simple day to day activities count too. Activities like gardening, housework, mowing the lawn are all activities that can help improve your heart health.

Modifiable Risk Factor 6: Smoking
Smoking is the most preventable cause of death in the United States. Even second hand smoke, constantly breathing in smoke from someone else's cigarette or cigar also increases your risk of developing heart disease and other serious conditions like cancer. If you smoke the best thing you can do for your health and the health of others around you is to quit. Discuss quitting with your doctor. He or she can help direct you to a smoking cessation program that's right for you.

So in honor of February - Heart Health Month - Shaklee wants to be sure you are taking special care of your most prized possession, your heart. Air Purifier Testimonies

I just bought a 104 year old house that hasn't been well maintained in many years. Since moving in, my allergies have been acting up and I have noticed mold in my basement as well as a tremendous amount of dust. I figured I owed you the courtesy to comment on this 'work of art' after all I put you through with my questions and skepticism. I really do see a difference with Peter's allergy and asthma issues after getting it. Sure, it could be totally ironic that we have seen such a change, yes it is also possible that Peter is getting older and his body is handling it better, but I have seen an immediate change. After our vacation in May, Peter did get a summer cold and it lasted only 3 days, not 7 like it usually would. He didn't even get the asthma cough like he did before when he would get a cold. He has been taking his allergy medicine but even last summer he was taking it and was getting sick all the time.

I do also notice a difference in the dust in the house. The tv does have very little on it and the tables also look nicer for a longer period of time. Pete, my husband, even commented that his allergies did seem better this summer. He said he didn't want to admit it, but he also thinks we made a good choice in buying it even though it seemed like a lot of money to shell out. I am anxious to see if our good luck continues and we have a healthier winter. Of course, Peter is starting school so we'll see. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I know of two other people who may want one. The little girl across the street is 3 and has leukemia and is in remission however, her mom seemed a little interested. For several years, I've had problems sleeping at night for more than two or three hours at a time because of difficulty breathing from the various allergens in the air. I had to blow my nose continually. I felt miserable at night, and due to a lack of sleep, I was tired much of the time. There were also countless nights of not sleeping one wink. My sleeping patterns became irregular.

During the day, I often felt miserable. Dust, cat dander, fumes from chemical supermarket cleaners and other allergens contributed to my breathing challenges. Healthy, Natural Skin Care Solutions including Red Skin

Today I read some powerful testimonies on a Skin Care Product* this company makes (see below). I knew this was a quality product that worked very well for skin redness on the face. Proud Mom Shares Pic of Good Customer

Tonight I had planned to post an entirely different subject, and then I saw this picture of #15 which was in the Williamsport, PA newspaper today. And so this proud mother decided to put it up here for everyone to see. This young lady is in fact a Shaklee Independend Distributor's child and she has swallowed a lot of nutrition supplements, used many personal care products, had her laundry done and home cleaned with the wonderful cleaning products that help save our planet as well, drinks the filtered water (when she is at home) and benefits from the air purification at home (and she even has a portable air purifier at school). So I think she deserves some publicity here! You will have to ask her personally for her testimonials!!

A little background for all of you who don't know Jessica Rae Zerbee personally: she is a freshman student and athlete at Lycoming College, Williamsport, PA. She is a business major and plays basketball for the women's team. She has started most games this year which is quite an accomplishment as a freshman player. She has played basketball on organized teams for probably 10 years and loves the sport. She is a true point guard with a great eye for the entire court and a most aggressive defensive player.

What a couple of weeks! Work, work work. Fun, fun, FUN! It is true that a home-based business is a lot of work. We do tend to work a lot of hours, at least at times. To buy Organic OR Not to buy Organic?

There was an article today in the Personal Journal section of the Wall Street Journal. The subject was buying Organic foods. Specifically, the content was about when buying organic makes sense and when it doesn't.

Food buying in general has become a tough task. This is especially true when you are trying to eat healthy.

We hear and read a lot in the news about eating healthy. When we get to the store, it is very confusing. Reading labels and choosing products when there is so much available. What is really good? What makes sense economically? How can I do the best for my family?

There are pricey organic versions of many foods today. Some are willing to pay the fat prices because they think they are doing a good thing for themselves and/or their family. What the article boiled down to is not really news. The thing is that we have to do our homework, just like in anything else. It isn't easy, but in the end if you want results, it is worth it.

There does seem to be some foods that are worth paying the extra price that is usually associated with the organic label, and then there are times when that option isn't worth the extra funds required. One example is with fruit. The author's research provided information that suggests apples, peaches, bell peppers, strawberries, imported grapes, spinach, lettuce, potatoes and carrots may have higher levels of pesticides in conventional versions, and so organic might just make sense with these products. In contrast, broccoli, bananas, frozen sweet peas, frozen corn, asparagus, avacados, and onions seem to have levels of pesticides that are low even in conventional versions, and so buying organic might not be a smart buy if these products are in fact more pricey.

It might be worth your effort to pick up a copy of the Wall Street Journal to read this two-page article yourself. If you are wanting to make these kinds of decisions, it is important to gather research material. In particular, Ford executives misjudged the strategic importance of a cluster of energy and environment issues. The company continued to bank on gas-guzzling SUVs and light trucks even as fuel prices shot up, tailpipe emissions loomed larger as an issue, and consumer tastes shifted toward more fuel-efficient cars. Meanwhile, Toyota ’s brisk trade in green vehicles like the hybrid Prius and a “cool” and eco-friendly reputation leave it enjoying record profits and poised to overtake GM as the world’s largest auto maker.

Ford isn’t the only company to have been blindsided by the “Green Wave” washing over the business world. But it is ironic that just-departed CEO Bill ord, who was known for his environmental interests, never succeeded in getting his leadership team to understand the need to make the environment a core element of the company’s business strategy.

Today, no company can afford to ignore the challenges posed by pollution control, natural resource management and energy consumption. Business leaders in manufacturing and services, big companies and small, must prepare for a world of tighter supplies of fossil fuels (and resulting high prices), greenhouse gas emissions controls, limited water and rising resource costs. Businesses also face demands from an array of new environment-oriented stakeholders including bankers, market analysts, customers, employees and communities, in addition to the traditional pressures from regulators, environmental groups and other NGOs.

While every business must manage the risks and costs of environmental protection, some are also finding an upside to going green. With its “ecomagination” thrust, GE has positioned itself to respond to society’s environmental problems. CEO Jeff Immelt envisions billion-dollar businesses selling wind turbines, more efficient jet engines and drinking-water purification systems. From Ikea to Coca-Cola, companies are finding ways to differentiate their products, create new lines of business, win customer loyalty and enhance their brand value by taking up their customers’ environmental interests and values.

Even Wal-Mart has emerged as a major player in the world of corporate sustainability. CEO Lee Scott has promised to cut his company’s energy use by 30%, reduce waste by 25%, and become the world’s leading seller of organic products.

So what went wrong in

Detroit ? And what are the lessons for the business community more generally? Three main points can be drawn from Ford’s collapse, which has a number of causes, including skyrocketing health-care costs and burdensome retiree benefits, but a fundamental link to mishandled environmental strategy.

First, the Green Wave is real. Companies need to learn how to manage environmental challenges or they will be taken under. It is not enough to sponsor beach clean-ups and contribute a few dollars to the local environmental group. Corporate leaders need to look at their operations through a green lens and fold environmental thinking into their core business strategy.

Second, to target their environmental efforts, companies need to map their ecological “footprint.” Ford had eco-initiatives, but they failed to address the company’s real vulnerabilities. In fact, Ford’s redesigned River Rouge manufacturing facility had state-of-the-art environmental features including a grass roof and natural ventilation. And the company contributed millions of dollars to rainforest protection. But Ford’s problem wasn’t pollution at its factories, and it certainly wasn’t deforestation of the jungle. No, Ford’s strategic focus needed to be on its vehicles. The market shift toward more eco-friendly and efficient cars caught Ford flat-footed with a product line heavy on fuel-chugging and pollution-spewing behemoths like the Expedition and Navigator.

Every business needs to understand its environmental exposure. If you’re Coca-Cola, you need to face up to water issuesas CEO Neville Isdell is doing. If you’re an auto maker, fuel efficiency and tailpipe emissions have to be at the heart of your strategy.

Third, there is money to be made solving society’s environmental problems. If GE’s multi-billion dollar bet on ecomagination is not a sufficient signal of this reality,

Toyota ’s success surely is. Dozens of other companies are finding opportunities to turn green to gold. Shaklee, for example, has built a thriving business selling nutritional supplements and eco-safe cleaning supplies with a focus on living in harmony with nature. To back up its green image, the company has promised to offset all its carbon emissions and to plant a million trees in Africa .

The bottom line is clear: Environmental factors have emerged front and center in business. Ford is paying a high price for missing this development. No company can afford to ignore this object lesson.

Boost Your Immune System

Today I was reading the November 15, 2006 issue of Bottom Line Personal. There is an article written by a doctor from the Cleveland Clinic about Boosting Immunity and ways to stay healthy. This is a very timely topic with winter almost upon us and the challenging health season that always comes along with winter. I have read similar information in various health publications and year after year, it is good advice if you want your next three or four months to be healthy ones.

The article talks about how it is pretty amazing that we are not sick all the time. I have thought about that many times myself. If you think about it, our bodies are under almost constant attack by viruses, bacteria, and other disease-causing organisms. We are reminded at this time of year to wash our hands often, and that is because your hands can harbor up to two million germs.

Thankfully our immune systems are pretty effective in fighting off these attacks. There are factors that reduce their effectiveness and include stress, aging, deficiencies in nutrition, and new viruses and bacteria that the body might find difficult to defend.

Since there is an increased exposure at this time of year, it is best to do what we can to help our immune system do its job. There is lots of good information at different sources that recommend exercise (but not too much), washing hands often (like mentioned above), manage stress by engaging in activities like listening to music, meditating, going for a walk (or other exercise), eating right, quit smoking, get enough sleep - these are all good things to do yearround in fact!

My husband listened in and will probably be participating sometime soon with his own testimony. He is a few weeks into the Cinch weight loss (inches and fat) program and has lost 11 lbs. He did not measure inches (but please do so because you will want to see the actual number that comes OFF) but is very happy that he can 'feel' the inch loss as well as the weight loss. The Bottom Line Personal subscription that I get also entitles me to a yearly calendar with extra pieces of interesting information posted on each calendar monthly page.

On the October page there was a section called Weighing In. With all the Cinch activity, I seemed to be tuned in to any and all weigh management news.

The Low-carb diet danger was addressed. It states that these popular diets which are typically high in protein and fat, often are low in fiber. The new finding is that adults who ate three servings of fiber-rich whole grains every day during an 11-year period reduced their risk of death from any cause by up to 23%. High-fiber foods help maintain body weight, improve cholesterol levels and lower blood pressure. The recommended daily fiber intake is 30 grams (g). Folks- remember that there IS FIBER in the Cinch shakes and with two servings a day, this is 16 grams of fiber from the shakes alone.   A couple of fiber-rich food sources include one pear at 10g, one cup of rasberries at 8g, and one cup of lentils at 16g.

Also on the October calendar page there is a post that came from Jens Jordan MD, a professor of clinical pharmacology and medicine, that states people can lose five pounds per year just by drinking two liters of water a day. For every additional 30 minutes commuters drive each day, there is a 3% greater chance of being obese compared with those who drive less. There are some interesting pieces that I read this week and would like to share.

First comes from the Bottom Line Personal publication that I have subscribed to for years. It always has good articles and interesting ideas that are presented. In a feature called, "The Case Against Vitamins", it is reported that at least half of American adults take vitamins and other supplements regularly. Of course I am right in there with that number and as a Shaklee Distributor take lots and lots of supplements.

It goes on to point out some interesting facts that were taken from a recent report by a panel of advisers at the National Institutes of Health: 1) Anyone who eats fewer than 1500 calories per day SHOULD TAKE A DAILY MULTIVITAMIN. This would include most everyone on any kind of weight loss program. 2) Women who are trying to conceive and those who are in their first trimester of pregnancy SHOULD TAKE A DAILY MULTIVITAMIN. 3) Those over age 70 may need vitamin D and calcium supplements. While they found that there is not enough evidence to recommend the use of vitamins and supplements to prevent chronic disease, why should we wait until they figure this out?

There was concern expressed that megadoses of supplements may cause health dangers. I agree with this and it is one of the very reasons that over twenty years ago I chose a health and wellness company that I trusted, and that made products that are very balanced and are as close to the way you would find the nutrients in nature as they possible can be. Plus I follow the VERY SAFE recommended dosages and have always been confident in the beneftis these products provide for my body. My concern is that it is very hard to get the nutrients we need to be healthy from food alone. This is due to many factors including the foods we choose to eat, the fact that there aren't the nutrients present in many of the foods available to us that there once was, our busy lifestyles that many times lead us to quick meals that are not nutritious, and the increased exposures to that which can cause disease and illness and require our bodies to be healthier to fight.

I wouldn't continue to take products over 20 years if they were not having such a wonderful effect on my health. I know the odds for disease in one's life are increasing daily. It is all around us. I am doing what I can to take charge of my own good health. That is really what we all have to do.

Speaking from the perspective of one who has been involved in Shaklee for a number of years, I'd like to comment on the fact that the Simple System offers some benefits that we don't speak of very often, but that are felt every day as we continue to mail out flyers, look for others who are interested and teach those who are interested to follow the system.

Another important freedom is the freedom that we give to others to allow them to do the system if they feel it's the right thing for them to be doing. OR...to NOT do the system if they choose not to. We can attempt to encourage and motivate if we like, but we recognize and accept how valuable it is to allow others to choose, or to be different.

That brings me to the final freedom I'd like to mention: The freedom to JUST BE A FRIEND with no hidden agendas!! I cannot tell you how wonderful it feels to go to church every Sunday, sit by someone who is on my list of 100 and not even mention Shaklee unless she/he does! I have increased my friendships many fold in these past six months of following the system. My friends seem comfortable around me and we can enjoy each other, without me wondering how I can "insert" something about Shaklee into the conversation and feel them withdrawing from me! And the great thing is, a number of my friends have joined Shaklee and are benefiting from our great products, because they were interested in something on a flyer that caught their eyes.

I hope you'll forgive my need to verbalize these feelings, but more importantly, I hope this has been of help to someone else.

Just last night I was out at a local high school social event, and one of the people on 'my list' came up to me and said she received my information and would call in a few days to place an order. Here is an article I posted on another Shaklee blog where we are targeting key words for Search Engine Optimization for our Work from Home businesses.

I have been a Shaklee Distributor for about six years and for most of that time it has been sharing these wonderful health and wellness products that I have used for over 20 years with friends, family and referrals. With one child through college now, two present college students, and my baby just entering high school, I am entering a new phase in my life. I am ready to be serious at my work from home business.

I have a real passion and desire and now more time for sharing these health and wellness products with more people. My focus lately has been to learn the world of online marketing for home-based businesses so that I can use this vehicle to grow my business as the company embarks on its global plans of expansion. I am enjoying my work online so much that it has been consuming a lot of my time.

Generations of people sharing a well kept secret!

Picking a product to start is a tough thing to do because you might say that I am 'attached' to many of them. Maybe I will just go back to my beginning with this 'secret' company and the reason why I found it.
